Throw in trades and Yzerman has almost completely transformed Detroit for the upcoming season. Here is a look at all the movement that has occurred in Detroit
Detroit — There was a lot of mystery attached to this NHL offseason. Nobody really knew, for sure, how active it was going to be. A lot of teams were hamstrung by the salary cap, and not a lot of teams had ample space to add salary (the Red Wings being one of those lucky teams).
As the NHL Draft is held virtually for a second straight year, the Red Wings find themselves on the clock with the sixth pick in the draft. Meanwhile, Hockeytown comes together for a draft party at Little Caesars Arena.
Detroit — The Red Wings added more forward depth Friday, as general manager Steve Yzerman returned to his Tampa connections. The Wings acquired center Mitchell Stephens from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. Stephens, 24, has appeared in 45 games for the back-to-back Stanley Cup-champion
Thanks for always standing on your head, Bernie! Good luck in New Jersey.

Helmer, thank you for all the memories and the impact you made on and off the ice here in Hockeytown. Best of luck to you and your family on your next chapter in Colorado.
The Detroit Red Wings are still adding after acquiring center Mitchell Stephens from Tampa Bay for Detroit’s 2022 6th round pick. The 24-year-old Stephens is known to Steve Yzerman, who drafted him back in 2015 during the second round when he was running the Lightning. With the departures of Luke Glendening and Darren Helm, a

It’s been a busy week for Steve Yzerman as he continues to trim the fat from his roster (mostly left by Ken Holland) and retool this team to his liking. The week started with a bang when he surprised the hockey world by acquiring Alex Nedeljkovic from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Jonathan Bernier
If you’ve got 30 minutes to spare it’s always good getting to listen to Steve Yzerman, who continues to use GM speak, but in a way that doesn’t anger me. He goes over a wide variety of topics from the kids who have to earn their time to the plan for drafting in the future,
Steve Yzerman pointed out that in the immediate aftermath of free agency, every team sees itself as having gotten better. The Detroit Red Wings weren’t among the big spenders on the market this week; rather, Yzerman stuck with his plan and made low-key signings. No one got more than two years. The biggest signing was
When former Detroit Red Wings forward Darren Helm signed with the Colorado Avalanche Thursday, it closed the chapter on the last remaining link to the 2008 Stanley Cup Champion. Helm was an instrumental part of the 2008 team, and would shine even brighter in the 2009 playoff run–though that one wouldn’t end as spectacularly for
The Detroit Red Wings, though never really answering the Jamie Benn crosscheck to Dylan Larkin’s neck last season–may have this afternoon: Now, general manager Steve Yzerman did indicate that Witkowski was more a signing for Grand Rapids than the big club, but let’s say it might not be a coincidence if Witkowski is called up
Detroit — Steve Yzerman finally came up for air Thursday after a frenetic period for the Red Wings and the rest of the NHL. A flurry of trades, the expansion draft, the NHL Entry Draft and the start of unrestricted free agency all occurred over approximately two weeks. The Wings were involved in all of it. Now, about eight weeks
The Red Wings announced a pair of free-agent signings Thursday afternoon — two defensemen who have played with the team before. Luke Witkowski is coming back on a two-year deal: Just a few minutes before announcing the Witkowski deal, the team announced they are bringing back defenseman Dan Renouf on a one-year deal: Fans already
Pius Suter’s outlook changed quickly from disappointment to opportunism. Rejected by one NHL team, free agency came as a balm, and a boon. The Detroit Red Wings sought scoring help, and Suter fit general manager Steve Yzerman’s plan: A young, skilled player who could be had on a short-term deal. If Suter pans out, great;
