The season is just a few weeks old, but the Detroit Red Wings already have made some history. In Sunday’s game vs. the Chicago Blackhawks, Lucas Raymond became the first teenaged Red Wing (19 or younger) to score a hat trick since Steve Yzerman did it vs. Toronto on March 30,1985.
SATURDAY NIGHT, HOCKEY NIGHT: Detroit Red Wings boxed in by penalties in 6-1 loss to Montreal Canadiens
FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME: Lucas Raymond scores first NHL goal as Detroit Red Wings top Blue Jackets, 4-1 at LCA
In the third period, with Detroit nursing a 5-3 lead, Raymond blasted a slapshot past Marc-Andre Fleury for this third goal of the game in this video from Bally Sports Detroit.
Raymond, drafted No. 4 overall by Yzerman in 2020, was 19 years and 210 days old on Saturday.
The goal puts him in select company with two other young Wings, Yzerman and Gordie Howe, as the only players in franchise history, age 19 or younger, to have a four-point game.
Howe’s game back in 1947 was a four-assist night. Raymond’s hat trick made him the second youngest Wing ever with a hat trick; Yzerman also had a hat trick as an 18-year-old, scoring three times against Toronto on Dec. 23, 1983, at 18 years, 228 days.
