Red Wings Sign Goalie Campbell

The Detroit Red Wings added goalie Jack Campbell on a one-year deal on Monday.

The deal is worth $775,000.

Campbell was bought out by the Edmonton Oilers over the weekend after having spent most of last season with their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors.

Along with Cam Talbot, that makes two goalies signed by the Red Wings on the opening day of free agency.

Given Campbell’s usage last season, it’s probably safe to assume that he’ll be waived down to Grand Rapids to work with Sebastian Cossa.  That said, there is a logjam in the crease throughout the Red Wings’ organization and it looks like there are dominoes yet to fall.  Ville Husso, Talbot, and Alex Lyon all look like they could stick with Detroit.  Campbell and Cossa would then be the Griffins goalies.  That leaves Jan Bednar and Carter Gylander with the Toledo Walleye.  Toledo probably wants someone with more experience, though, and I’m not sure we should expect Detroit to carry three goalies again.

As for my usual jersey number prediction…  With Christian Fischer seemingly departed, that frees up #36 for Campbell.
