The Detroit Red Wings re-signed pending unrestricted free agent forward Matt Luff to a one year, two-way deal this morning.

The deal is reportedly worth $775,000 at the NHL level and $400,000 at the AHL level with $450,000 guaranteed.

Luff was set to become a restricted free agent at noon today but was not given a qualifying offer by yesterday’s deadline, meaning he would have been an unrestricted free agent.  By not qualifying him, the Red Wings were able to work out this two-way deal instead.

He is the third player who the Red Wings opted not to qualify to sign a contract with the team this morning, following Klim Kostin and Gustav Lindstrom.

Luff – like Austin Czarnik – filled in admirably when called upon in Detroit and will be counted on as a veteran leader in Grand Rapids this season.  This deal is about him getting paid at the AHL level to reflect his role in the organization.
