Winging It In Motown

Re-signed Adam Erne looks to ‘pick up where I left off’ after career year with Red Wings – Detroit News

“It’s a business and I don’t think anyone takes that stuff personally; I don’t,” Erne said. “Everybody has a job to do, and I’m happy we were able to settle when we did.”

There’s a lot of info in this post outside of this blurb, so I will recommend you read the whole thing. As a bonus it’s not paywalled.

I’m on record for being in position to eat shit when Erne does well. I’m already wearing my lobster bib. It’s a shit lobster.

NHL OWNERS APPROVE JERSEY ADS FOR 2022-23 SEASON – Sportico

The ads must fit a rectangle 3 inches by 3.5 inches, making them slightly bigger than the patches that the NBA added to its jerseys for the 2017-18 season.

There were a lot of good points on both sides of this brought up in yesterday’s comments, but I wanted to get to the bottom of a few things:

On the “slippery slope argument” – I do think oldfatbaldguy touched on a good point about how at its heart, that’s a complaint about a thing that’s not actually happening, but there’s good nuance to this. Namely, the concern about where on the slope we may find ourselves weighs heavily on a fandom that just watched the league introduce helmet ads and discussed when that happened that more would follow. It’s worth complaining about being on the slope because there’s a lot of agreement among North American fans that the bottom of this slope (European hockey advertising) is much less-palatable.

Then there’s the concept of where exactly the line is drawn for you. I hate to admit this with every fiber of my being, but the Red Wings ending up looking like an Austrian league team on the ice would make me complain until everybody else got sick of me, but I can’t in good faith say it would make me stop watching.

This leads into the “what’s the big deal?” argument brought up by chuckinknucks – It doesn’t affect the actual play which, ostensibly is the reason we’re watching hockey. If you still love the Red Wings, then why does it matter if the Red Wings are wearing a tiny Ford logo somewhere near their Adidas logo and put in an inferior position to the actual Red Wings’ logo?

Although, both Larkanakin Skywalker and Nightmare on Helm Street answered that pretty well – The enjoyment of a hockey game is about more than the folks in red trying to out-hockey those dorks in blue. The emotional engagement is tied to things that no fan has to make sense of for another fan and if that little logo pulls them out of the moment as a reminder that the game has corporate overlords, then it makes things less enjoyable.

In the end, there’s no right answer to any of this because there’s no such thing as a right way to fan.
