Welcome back to the second pick of the first round for the Red Wings. I hope you’ve enjoyed yourself between Detroit’s own #6 overall pick and now. This one came a little quicker than we were anticipating, as the Wings traded with Dallas to move into the #15 slot in return for picks #23, 48 (NYR’s 2nd round) and 138 (OTT’s 5th round).
Here’s what we’ve got with the team’s latest selection:
Date of Birth: Nov 21, 2002
Position: G
Age: 18
Height: 6’6” / 197 cm
Place of Birth: Hamilton, ON
Weight: 212 lbs / 96 kg
Nation: Canada
Catches: Left
Cossa is considered the “other” top goalie in this draft class and he’s huge. Here’s what people smarter than I am had to say about him:
He mixes things up and recovers quickly on rebounds to get in front of multiple shot sequences in order to clear his crease. He’s not afraid to use his hands, and does a good job of covering up before they spring loose for scoring chances. He’ll use a wide array of save options to match whatever the shooter presents. –Elite Prospects 2021 NHL Draft Guide
Cossa is so tall that when he does go down in the butterfly, his shoulders still reach the crossbar and his frame takes up much of the net. His glove as well as his blocker are solid. This helps him take away the top of the net. -Ben Kerr, LWOS
It feels very much like Yzerman is trying to put together the team he helped build to two straight Stanley Cups. Since he’s not starting with Barclay Goodrow, I’m ok with it.
Stay tune to WIIM tomorrow as the Wings have 6 picks in the following six rounds. Things kick off at 11am ET and we’ll be on the clock pretty quick. Thankfully those rounds combined don’t take much longer than the first round.
