Welcome back to our Seattle Expansion Draft Series. If you haven’t read the first article that lays out the rules of the expansion draft, that would be a good starting point, as I’ll only give the very basic rules in each of these follow up articles. Previous articles focusing on Detroit in this series were the second article, the seventh article, and the twentieth article.
Today is the day. The expansion draft is finally here. We will get to see the 30 players selected by the Seattle Kraken. Some of them will go on to be key players for the franchise. Some of them will never play a game for the NHL’s newest team.
I set this up so people can have a place to discuss player selections as they begin to be leaked. We can also use this as a liveblog for the event at 8pm ET tonight.
This will be updated throughout the day, so keep checking back in.
These are based on reports from reliable sources. If things change, the list will be updated with the correct player.
Dallas Stars – Jamie Oleksiak
Early word is #SeaKraken are closing in on contracts with two UFA defensemen: Adam Larsson (EDM) and Jamie Oleksiak (DAL).
Not finalized. But barring any last minute change, the expectation is those players will be the selections from #Oilers and #GoStars.@DFOHockey

Florida Panthers – Chris Driedger
Just got word that the Seattle Kraken will NOT select Carey Price in the expansion draft.
Chris Driedger signed a contract to be the team’s 1A, and the Kraken will likely select other young more affordable goalies to join him. I hear they really like Minnesota’s Kaapo Kahkonen

Montreal Canadiens – Cale Fleury
BREAKING: Sources tell @DFOHockey the #SeaKraken have NOT selected Carey Price from Montreal in the Expansion Draft.
The #Habs keep their goaltending duo in-tact, but are likely to lose defenseman Cale Fleury.

Pittsburgh Penguins – Brandon Tanev
Early word is #SeaKraken have zeroed in on Brandon Tanev from the #pens.
Kraken already unfolding as tough to play against. With Brandon in the Kraken fold, looking forward to potential Tanev v. Tanev brother matchups in the Pacific. @DFOHockey

St Louis Blues – Vince Dunn
Sources say #SeaKraken also passed on another high-profile, big money player: Vladimir Tarasenko.
Subject to change but sounds like the selection from #stlblues will be Vince Dunn.@DFOHockey

Tampa Bay Lightning – Yanni Gourde
Early word is #SeaKraken were focused in on one player from #GoBolts lot: Yanni Gourde.
Not entirely clear how tonight will work. Teams wondering if he’s the only Tampa player heading to Seattle? Could change. But sense is Gourde will be a Kraken before night is done. @DFOHockey

Toronto Maple Leafs – Jared McCann
His stay was short-lived in Toronto. The #SeaKraken will be selecting Jared McCann from the #Leafs.
The end result: Toronto traded prospect Filip Hallander and a 7th round pick to Pittsburgh to essentially protect their roster from Seattle.@DFOHockey
