Wings Put in Good Effort, Lose in OT: Tampa 4, Detroit 3 (OT)

Winging It In Motown

We’re playing Tampa Bay, Svechnikov is a healthy scratch, Greiss is in goal. it’s the set up for a super fun night!

At least something good happened today!

Mick just called texting “The quiet side of the phone,” and Light The Lamp actually provides some value to the broadcast.

The teams trade chances early on, with Larkin getting a good shot off on his first game back.

Stamkos almost has a goal, but he takes a penalty for high sticking Christian Djoos. A double minor penalty. As we all expect, they score on the first half of the 4 minutes, with a goal by Adam Erne.

Detroit has scored a power play goal in the last 5 games. This sounds like a made up statistic, like saying that you could fit 6,560,755 rubber ducks on the ice surface of an NHL rink, but it’s true.

The horn is blowing every single whistle, and it’s very strange.

The horn started blowing during play, but it’s fine because Tampa Bay had the puck. Apparently now they are just going to ignore the horn, as it blows again, and they keep playing.

Michael Rasmussen is gaining confidence the more he plays. Imagine that.

Marc Staal notices something in Palat’s teeth and tries to show him where it is with his stick. So he goes to the box for 2 minutes.

Tampa shows Detroit how to run a power play and scores off a pretty passing play to tie it. You’ll notice that they have a one-time option from both half boards.

The horn is still going off on random times, and I can’t imagine it’s not really distracting the players. Tampa scores again almost immediately after the first goal. It was Tyler Johnson because of course it was.

Detroit takes another penalty, with Helm going to the box on a hooking call. Tampa almost scored several times, but because of some good saves by Greiss and some luck, it remains 2-1 Tampa.

Someone clearly fixed the horn by turning it off and on again.

Not too much was going on for the first chunk of time, but then all the sudden, something happens! And it’s a good thing!

Nemeth comes off the bench and walks into a laser of a one-timer. Zadina provides the screen, and it’s 2-2.

Dylan Larkin makes it 3-2! It’s gotta feel even better for him because it sure looks like Tampa is trying to re-injure him. That could just be because I don’t like them, and it could be because they are trying to re-injure him.

I always forget how much I hate Tampa Bay when we don’t play them for a while. Cernak punches Mantha in the face after they both are going back and forth with each other. Mantha drops the gloves, and every Red Wings fan holds their breath.

I don’t want Mantha fighting, but I don’t see how he’s supposed to just stand there and get punched in the face.

The period ends 3-2 Detroit. It was one of the better periods in quite a while for Detroit.

The period starts with Tampa starting trouble before the opening faceoff. They proceed to start taking runs at Detroit players the entire first shift, so you can see what their plan is to get back in the game.

Cirelli hooks Merrill, and Detroit goes to the power play 2 minutes into the period.

They don’t score, but it doesn’t look as bad as it has when it was really struggling.

Zadina is looking good again tonight.

Detroit loses the puck in their zone, and Cernak has absolutely ages to shoot. Greiss should have stopped it, but Detroit’s defense was terrible. 3-3.

This game has had some ups and downs, but being 3-3 with Tampa with 4 minutes left is one of the Red Wings best performances overall this season.

They will get at least one point out of it as we go to overtime.

For the first 90 seconds of overtime, it almost looks like Detroit was trying to play keepaway. Eventually, Larkin gets a shot from close in, but it’s saved.

Blake Coleman wins it for Tampa Bay on a one-timer off a bad change by Detroit. Compared to how bad I feared this game could be, the Wings put up a good effort.

4-3 in OT for Tampa.

RIP LCA Broken Horn. You honked loudly and brightly, but you flew too close to the sun. We will never forget you.
